Search Kansas LLC & Corporation Records
The official Kansas Business Search lets you look up registered corporations, LLCs, limited partnerships, LLPs and foreign entities by business name, Kansas Secretary of State business ID or current resident agent.
Use the record to confirm the exact entity before filing an information report, purchasing certified documents, checking a resident agent or starting a reinstatement.
Fastest option: search the official database by business name. If the name is long, Kansas recommends entering only part of it. A distinctive keyword can also work when you do not know the exact order of the words.
If you have the Kansas business ID: use it. Enter the digits without dashes or spaces. The Kansas SOS business ID is not the federal EIN/FEIN.
Important limitation: Kansas says the regular business database should not be used to determine name availability. A separate Name Availability search uses different logic.
How to Search Kansas Business Records
The Kansas search is straightforward once you know which identifier to use. Start broad only when necessary; otherwise use the business ID for the cleanest result.
- Open the official Kansas Business Search.
- Choose business name, Kansas Secretary of State business ID or current resident agent name.
- If searching a name, use a distinctive part of the name rather than an unnecessarily long phrase.
- Choose Contains when the word may appear anywhere in the name or Starts With when you know how the name begins.
- Open the correct result and compare the business ID, status, entity type and resident-agent information.
- Save the business ID before ordering documents or filing a report.
What You Can Search in the Kansas Database
| Search method | Best use | Useful detail |
|---|---|---|
| Business name | General LLC, corporation, LP, LLP or foreign-entity lookup. | Use a shorter or more distinctive part of a long name if necessary. |
| Kansas business ID | Returning to one exact KSSOS record. | Do not enter dashes or spaces. This number is not an FEIN. |
| Current resident agent | Research when you know the agent but not the exact business name. | Use Contains or Starts With as appropriate. |

Kansas Business Name Availability Is a Separate Search
One of the most important corrections to the older article is that the standard business database is not the official Kansas name-availability test. The live Business Search page says different logic is used for availability.
Open the official Kansas Business Name Availability search.
- Use the regular Business Search to research existing businesses and similar names.
- Then use the separate Name Availability search for the state’s actual electronic availability check.
- If a proposed name conflicts, review whether written consent to use a similar business name applies to your filing.
- Do not rely only on Google results, domain availability or social-media usernames.
Which Businesses Register With the Kansas Secretary of State?
Kansas requires corporations, LLCs, LLPs, LPs and other entities formed under Kansas business laws to register. Foreign businesses doing business in Kansas must also register with the Secretary of State.
Generally registered with KSSOS
- Limited liability companies
- Corporations
- Limited liability partnerships
- Limited partnerships
- Foreign entities authorized to do business in Kansas
Important exceptions
- Sole proprietors do not register with the Kansas Secretary of State.
- General partnerships are not required to register, although they may file a Statement of Partnership Authority.

Kansas Information Reports Are Filed Every Two Years
Kansas moved registered businesses to a biennial information-report cycle. The filing year follows the odd/even year in which the business originally formed or registered.
| Business | Filing year | Due date | Current filing instruction fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| For-profit entity | Even formation year → even report years; odd formation year → odd report years | April 15 | $90 online / $110 paper for current for-profit corporation and LLC instructions |
| Not-for-profit corporation | Even formation year → even report years; odd formation year → odd report years | June 15 | $80 online / $80 paper |
Example: an LLC formed in 2026 follows even-numbered reporting years, so its next regular information-report year is 2028. A business formed in 2025 follows odd-numbered report years.

File-Stamped Copies, Certified Copies & Good Standing
Kansas gives users more free document access than many states. Any document filed by a business with the Secretary of State is available to view and print online without cost when it is available in the database. Tax documents are not kept in the Secretary of State business database.
| Document | What it means | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| File-stamped copy | Online copy showing the date the filing was received by the Kansas SOS. | Research and ordinary record review where certification is not required. |
| Certified copy | A filed document certified by the Secretary of State as a true and correct copy. | Banks, agencies, transactions or legal processes that require certification. |
| Certificate of Good Standing | State-issued proof showing the business is in good standing on the issue date. | When another organization specifically requests formal good-standing evidence. |

What to Do if the Kansas Business Is Forfeited
A Kansas business can be forfeited for failing to file an information report on time or for failing to maintain an active Kansas resident agent and registered office.
A certificate of reinstatement changes an eligible business from forfeited status back to active and good standing once the required filings and fees are completed.
- Search the entity and confirm the legal structure.
- Check the date the business forfeited.
- Identify which information reports are missing.
- Use the reinstatement form that matches the entity type.
- Submit the required reports with the reinstatement filing and applicable fees.

What the Kansas Resident Agent Listing Means
Kansas uses the term resident agent. Formation instructions state that the agent may be an individual, a Kansas-registered business or the business itself.
The registered office must be a Kansas address where the resident agent may regularly be present. The official LLC instructions say the registered office cannot be a PO box.

Common Kansas Business Search Problems
| Problem | Best fix |
|---|---|
| No business appears | Shorten the name and search a distinctive word using Contains. |
| Too many results | Use a less common keyword or search by Kansas business ID. |
| Business ID does not work | Remove dashes and spaces and make sure you are not entering an EIN/FEIN. |
| DBA cannot be found | Kansas does not register assumed, fictitious, trade or DBA names in the standard entity database. |
| Need to know if a new name is available | Use the separate official Name Availability search instead of relying on the entity database. |
| Status shows forfeited | Check missing information reports and resident-agent compliance, then review reinstatement requirements. |
| Need tax documents | Do not search for them in the SOS database; Kansas states tax documents are not filed with the Secretary of State. |
