Search Ohio LLC & Corporation Records
The Ohio Secretary of State Business Search lets you look up LLCs, corporations, nonprofits, partnerships, trade names, fictitious names and other state business records.
Use it to identify the correct entity number, check status, review statutory-agent information, open filing history and confirm the record before ordering a certificate or filing a change.
Best first search: use the strongest distinctive words from the company name rather than typing every suffix and punctuation mark.
Best exact identifier: once you locate the correct entity, save the Ohio Entity Number. Depending on the record type, older documents may refer to a charter, registration or license number, but the state search uses the entity number to identify the record.
Critical Ohio rule: ordinary Ohio LLCs and corporations do not file annual reports with the Secretary of State. Recurring filings apply only to certain entity and name types.
How to Search Ohio Business Records
Ohio’s current search offers several ways to locate a record. Business Name is the best starting point for most visitors; Entity Number is best when you already know the exact state identifier.
- Open the official Ohio Business Search.
- Choose Business Name.
- Enter the strongest unique words from the company name.
- Use the broadest status option when older or canceled records might matter.
- Review all close matches instead of assuming the first result is correct.
- Select Show Details for the matching entity.
- Save the Entity Number and review Agent/Registrant Information and filing history.

Ohio Business Search Options Explained
| Search type | Use it when | Practical tip |
|---|---|---|
| Business Name | You know the current legal, trade or business name. | Start with the most distinctive words rather than the entire legal name. |
| Exact Business Name | You know the state-record spelling exactly. | Use only after a broader name search if you are unsure of punctuation or suffixes. |
| Prior Business Name | You know an older company name. | Useful after mergers, conversions or name changes. |
| Agent / Registrant | You know the statutory agent or name registrant. | One professional agent may be connected with many unrelated entities. |
| Organizer / Incorporator | You know a person or company involved in forming the business. | Do not assume an organizer or incorporator is a current owner. |
| Number Search | You already have the entity number or document identifier. | This is normally the cleanest exact-record search. |

Do not confuse it with

Ohio Statutory-Agent Rules
Ohio uses the term statutory agent for the person or qualifying business designated to receive legal documents and official notices for the entity.
Who can serve
An Ohio-resident individual can serve. A qualifying domestic or foreign business entity authorized to do business in Ohio can also serve when it has an Ohio business address.
Address requirement
The statutory-agent address must be an Ohio street address such as a primary residence or usual place of business where an authorized person is available during normal hours.
Most entities use Form 521 — Statutory Agent Update when changing an agent. The current filing fee is $25.
Ohio Business Name Availability
Ohio requires many business names to be distinguishable upon the record from protected names already on file.
Changes that usually do not make a name distinguishable
- Punctuation or symbols
- Contractions or abbreviations
- Articles such as A, An or The
- Conjunctions such as And or Or
- LLC, Inc., Corp., Company and other entity designators
- Singular/plural or tense changes
Changes that may distinguish a name
- Different number formats
- Adding letters
- Changing word order
- Phonetic spelling variations
- Misspellings
- Some meaningful base-word changes
A name reservation currently costs $39 and can reserve an eligible Ohio business name for 180 days.
Open Ohio’s Guide to Name Availability.
- Search the proposed name exactly.
- Search the strongest words without entity suffixes.
- Check similar singular/plural, abbreviated and punctuation versions.
- Review trade names as well as corporations and LLCs.
- Read the state’s distinguishability rules before relying on the search result.
Ohio Trade Name vs. Fictitious Name
Ohio does not treat every “DBA” filing the same way. The state distinguishes between a trade name and a fictitious name.
Trade name
A registered trade name must be distinguishable from protected names already on file and gives the registrant exclusive use of that trade name in Ohio.
Fictitious name
A fictitious name does not have to be distinguishable and does not provide exclusive name protection. Multiple businesses can potentially use the same fictitious name.
| Name filing | Current fee | Timing |
|---|---|---|
| Trade / fictitious name registration | $39 | Initial registration |
| Renewal | $25 | Every five years |
| Registration update | $25 | When applicable record information changes |
Does an Ohio LLC or Corporation File an Annual Report?
Recurring Secretary of State filings apply to specific entity and registration types:
| Entity / registration | Required filing | Timing | Current fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Professional Association | Biennial Statement | By July 30 of each even-numbered year; SOS begins accepting July 1 | $25 |
| Limited Liability Partnership | Biennial Report | April 1–July 1 in odd-numbered years | $25 |
| Nonprofit corporation | Statement / Certificate of Continued Existence | Within five years after incorporation or the last qualifying corporate filing | $25 |
| Trade or fictitious name | Renewal | Every five years | $25 |
Ohio Certificate of Good Standing: $5
Ohio calls the document a Certificate of Good Standing; the state’s certificate system also notes that it may be referred to as a Full Force and Effect Certificate or Certificate of Registration.
The official fee is currently $5.
- Search the business first and save its Entity Number.
- Open the official Certificate of Good Standing service.
- Enter the business entity number.
- Confirm that the correct business appears.

Using the Ohio Record for Service of Process
The statutory-agent address shown in the business record is normally the first place to check when legal papers must be served on an Ohio business.
- Search the business by name.
- Open the correct record with Show Details.
- Review the Agent/Registrant Information section.
- Use the official service-of-process rules if the agent cannot be located, the address is invalid or another statutory condition applies.
When service through the Ohio Secretary of State is permitted for an Ohio business, the request generally requires a signed and notarized affidavit, the business’s last known address, the reason the agent could not be served and a summons identifying the defendant.
The current fee is $5 per address.
If Your Name or Address Appears on an Unauthorized Ohio Filing
Ohio has a specific complaint process for business documents that were filed without authority or used a person’s name or address without consent.
If a filing is determined to be fraudulent or unauthorized, the Secretary of State can cancel the filing, redact improperly used names or addresses and restore information that existed before the unauthorized filing.
- Search the business and open the detailed record.
- Review the filing history to identify the document in question.
- Confirm that you or someone authorized by the business did not submit or hire a service to submit it.
- Use Ohio’s Fraudulent Filing Complaint process if the document was truly unauthorized.
Open Ohio’s Fraudulent Filing Complaint page.
Common Ohio Business Search Problems
| Problem | Best next step |
|---|---|
| No result appears | Remove LLC, Inc., Corp., Company, punctuation and extra location wording. Search the root name. |
| Business changed names | Use Prior Business Name search. |
| You know only a person’s name | Try Agent/Registrant or Organizer/Incorporator as appropriate. |
| Too many similar businesses | Compare Entity Number, filing type, original filing date, status and statutory agent. |
| Owner or officer not shown | Ohio does not maintain searchable owner/officer lists in the business registry. |
| Received an annual-report letter | Remember that ordinary Ohio LLCs and corporations do not file annual reports with the SOS. Check the official scam-warning page before paying. |
| Need formal proof | Order the $5 Certificate of Good Standing using the exact Entity Number. |
